Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life No Correct Answer Essay - 1707 Words

Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth; it causes the termination of the embryo or fetus inside the women. There are two different types of abortion, a spontaneous abortion, which is also known as a miscarriage, and an induced abortion, where the embryo or fetus is purposely removed from the women’s body. The topic of induced abortion has been widely debated for hundreds of years. The issue of abortion was argued way back in the time of the ancient Hebrews. In the United States it became illegal around the mid 1800’s and not until the 1960’s was the argument for the right to abort brought back to the table. There are many arguments that fall behind each position. Those who argue for pro-choice, the right of the woman to choose, have a stronger argument because they provide more reasons for their argument and they base their arguments less on the question of value than those who argue for pro-life. A few of the many organizations that are pro-choice are NARAL Pro-Choice America, The Planned Parenthood Federation of American, and the National Organization for Women. Among these groups there are many different circumstances in which people believe abortion should be an option. There are some that approve of abortion only if the woman’s life is in danger. Others approve if tests predict the baby will have a serious physical or mental problem. Some people only approve of abortion if incest or rape is the cause of the pregnancy. Then there are also those that believe abortion should be the right of the woman no matter what the circumstances. The other issue is time. When is it acceptable to have an abortion? Most people who are pro-choice believe that abortion should happen before the fetus becomes viable, capable of living outside the mother’s body, which is usually around the sixth month of pregnancy (O’Brien par. 7). A large argument between the two sides of the issue is the time in which the fetus is considered a human being.
